Making the Case for Optimism in the Midst of Global Crises
The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy Zagreb hereby invites you to another “TED Talks” event on May 28 at 6 pm in the American Corner of Bogdan Ogrizovic Library, Preradoviceva 5.
“TED Talks” discussions will be hosted at the American Corner once a month (with the exception of July and August). Attendance is open to the public and you may forward this invitation to anyone who may be interested.
This month’s video features epidemiologist and philanthropist Dr. Larry Brilliant who makes the case for optimism in a world that seems to be falling apart. “We've known about global warming for 50 years and done little about it,” says Dr. Brilliant who, in spite of this and other depressing trends, is optimistic and tells us why. Dr. Brilliant has spent his career solving the ills of today -- from overseeing the last smallpox cases to saving millions from blindness -- and building technologies of the future. Now, as executive director of Google.org, he's redefining how we solve the world's biggest problems. Join us in a lively and open discussion led by Academician Dr. Ivo Šlaus and Ms. Nevena Crljenko from the Academy for Political Development. The video is in English while the following discussion will be held in Croatian.

TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is an annual conference that defines its mission as "ideas worth spreading". The lectures from these conferences have come to be known as “TED Talks” and, as a result of the popularity of the talks, the conference website has been reengineered around “TED Talks,” with the goal of giving everyone on-demand access to the world's most inspiring voices on topics including science, arts and design, politics, education, culture, business, global issues, technology and development, and entertainment. Speakers have included such people as former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Nobel laureates James D. Watson, Murray Gell-Mann, and Al Gore, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, and Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Approximately 370 TED talks are provided for free viewing online. As of January 2009, talks had been viewed over 90 million times by more than 15 million people. Today, TED has become a global community of people from every discipline and culture. They share the goal of gaining a deeper understanding of the world and turning that understanding into a better future for all.
